Rooftop garden in Canary Wharf

The Crossrail Place Roof Garden is one of the most unusual and modern attractions in London, located in the up-and-coming district of Canary Wharf in the east of the city. This unique roof garden opened in 2015 and is part of the Crossrail project, one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the UK, which brought the Elizabeth Line - a new subway line - through the city. Designed by the renowned architects Foster + Partners under the direction of Norman Foster, this garden combines innovative architecture with urban nature, providing a relaxing oasis amidst the high-rise landscape of the financial district. It is London's first roof garden built above a train station, symbolizing the connection between urban development and green spaces.

Crossrail Place architecture tour

The garden is situated on the roof of Crossrail Place, a multifunctional structure housing the Canary Wharf station of the Elizabeth Line. The roof itself is an impressive construction of wood and glass, formed by a delicate framework of 1,800 wooden beams and 306 glass triangles. This semi-open canopy, reminiscent of a futuristic greenhouse, protects the plants from the elements while allowing in natural light and fresh air. The structure spans approximately 300 meters and follows the line of the Prime Meridian, paying subtle homage to London's nautical history and Greenwich Mean Time. The garden is divided into two halves - an eastern and a western - each showcasing plants from different hemispheric regions.

Botanical diversity in London

The planting of the Crossrail Place Roof Gardens is carefully tailored to the geographical location and tells a story of global botanical diversity. In the eastern part, plants from Asia, Australia, and the Far East grow, including Japanese maple trees, bamboo, and tree ferns, creating an exotic, lush atmosphere. The western part is dedicated to plants from Europe and America, featuring species such as oaks, hydrangeas, and various grasses evoking the landscapes of these continents. This selection was deliberately made to reflect the trading routes of the East India Company, which was once active in the nearby docks. Overall, the garden encompasses over 100 different plant species, providing seasonal color changes and year-round appeal.

Events at Crossrail Place

A central wooden walkway winds through the garden, leading visitors past small ponds, seating areas, and hidden corners. The path is designed to be accessible, allowing for a leisurely stroll while enjoying the architecture and plant life. Along the way, viewpoints offer spectacular views of the Canary Wharf skyline, including glass skyscrapers like One Canada Square, as well as the Thames and surrounding Docklands. Especially at night, when the lighting bathes the structure in a warm glow, the garden exudes a magical atmosphere that emphasizes the contrast between nature and urban surroundings.

Oasis in London financial district

The Crossrail Place Roof Garden is more than just a botanical retreat - it is also a cultural and social hub. In the lower area of the facility, directly below the garden, is an events space with 250 seats, known as the "Crossrail Place Amphitheatre." This semicircular hall, also spanned by the roof structure, utilizes the garden's natural acoustics and serves as a stage for free performances such as concerts, plays, or film screenings that regularly take place. These events make the garden a lively community space, attracting a diverse audience, from office workers to tourists.

The creation of the garden was part of a larger plan to enhance the surroundings of the new station and transform the once run-down industrial area of Canary Wharf into a modern, livable neighborhood. The garden was opened to the public in 2015, years before the Elizabeth Line fully operational in 2022, serving as a preview of the transformative power of the Crossrail project. The collaboration between Foster + Partners, landscape architects Gillespies, and botanists from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew ensured a harmonious fusion of design, functionality, and nature.

For visitors, the Crossrail Place Roof Garden offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of London. Its elevated position above the train station creates unexpected tranquility amidst the busy financial world, while the proximity to restaurants, cafes, and shops in the lower area of Crossrail Place provides variety. A small café at the garden's edge offers refreshments with views of the plant life, and its integration into the transportation network makes it easily accessible for those looking to explore Canary Wharf.

Very well kept, peaceful and clean place, though it's very small place. Can not compare with barbican but good place to spend some time

Called in to have a walk around and see what plants were here. A quiet space with a good selection of plants; my wife loved the banana trees which had produced some small fruit. Not as big as I thought it would be but we thought worth the time visiting it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit it though, if you happen to be there I’d suggest a visit.

A wonderful experience how crucial it is to save species and great effort to set it up. Best place for kids to learn about exotic plants, caring for them and also having fun with the atmosphere.
